Guitar/Banjo # 253

A big and mildly distressed strap appropriate for just about any large guitar, banjo, or even a brand new Les Paul.

The oversize shoulder piece (11 5/8” long and 3” wide) was made from an old and very high quality piece of leather that has been well broken in and is still tough as nails. The surface is covered with very small wrinkles and has just a few slight battle scars noticeable only on close inspection. The leather is wonderfully soft and flexible but thick enough to provide excellent support for a heavier instrument. I removed all of the original edge stitching and replaced it with new waxed harness thread, hand sewn into the original needle holes.

The old color matching western rein strap has the same beautiful and mildly distressed character as the shoulder piece. I skived it down just slightly to level out the thickness at 3/16” and the ¾” width would allow me to punch the button holes directly into the strap if preferred, although it would finish very classy with adjustable ends. The leather is excellent quality, nicely broken in, and soft and supple with a solid and heavy duty feel. The strap fits snuggly into the carefully cut strap slots and the strap will not slide thru shoulder piece during use.

Total finished weight on this one would be around 8 ounces – pretty light for this big ol’ workhorse of a strap. If you prefer a wider strap, I guarantee neither you nor your instrument will be disappointed with this one. $115 plus shipping.

Mandolin #96

Right Hand

The dark brown shoulder piece is curved with a medium distressed character and favors the left shoulder of a right handed player. It measures 8” long and 1.5” wide and the leather surface is coarsely wrinkled with a shiny patina. The edge stitching is new waxed harness thread hand sewed into the original needle holes. I added the matching leather strap guide to keep the strap centered on the shoulder piece.

The old, dark oil strap is 5/8” wide, flexible and supple with a noticeably distressed look. It fits tightly in the carefully cut and shaped strap slots and the shoulder piece will not slide along the strap without intentional help. A non-adjustable headstock/F scroll loop is already formed on one end, secured with a leather thong and a few drops of leather glue. I’ll finish the other end with an adjustable end button tab once I get a measurement from the buyer.

The old, handmade appearance of this one would nicely compliment any  fine, handcrafted mandolin. $65 plus shipping.

Dobro # 8

A big ol’ plain and simple dobro strap that’s not too huge for a dreadnaught or heavy 5 string either

The 14.5” long by 3” wide shoulder piece is medium distressed looking, flexible, and fairly light weight, but big enough to support the squareneck while you’re bearing down on the Lonesome Road Blues. The surface is check free and has a slightly shiny patina and the edge stitching is new waxed harness thread hand sewn into the original needle holes.

The old 5/8” wide western rein strap is unskived and  almost 1/4” in thickness, excellent quality, and matches the shoulder piece dead on for color and character. If you’ve still got that boring nylon strap hanging on your old original Dobro resonator, this one will make it look great and maybe even sound better.

Custom fit to your exact specs for $85 plus shipping.

Guitar/Banjo # 249

A smaller sized strap just right for a small guitar or open back banjo but perfectly capable of holding a full size instrument as well. This one would also look nice on a mandolin.

The color shading and surface wrinkles on the shoulder piece give it a reasonably distressed appearance and no checking is present. The leather is incredibly soft and flexible and measures almost ¼” thick, including the suede leather lining. The length is 10 ¾” and the width is 1 ½” and I added the waxed harness thread edge stitching, hand sewed into hand punched needle holes.

Fitting snuggly into the carefully cut strap slots of the shoulder piece is a nice old color matching ½” wide western rein strap. I skived it down just enough to level out the thickness at 1/8” and the leather is soft and flexible and feels just right with the shoulder piece. The surface has some light wrinkles present, no checking, and one or two very small battle scars acquired in a previous life.

A great little strap that feels as good as it looks. $95 plus shipping.

Text Box: Good vintage leather takes time to locate, and I’m always looking. I try to have 8 straps available but don’t always succeed.
