Shoulder Piece Leather |
Very old and well used, western harness leather – the good stuff. Thick, well broken in, and super supple. The color is definitely black.
|
Shoulder Piece Stitching |
Artificial sinew hand sewn into hand punched needle holes. The stitching goes around the full circumference of the shoulder piece. Oiled leather buckstitching worked thru hand punched diagonal slits - a very time consuming process - and thoroughly hand rubbed it to give it an aged patina.

Shoulder Piece Distressed Level |
Medium with some surface crazing.
|
Shoulder Piece Notables |
No strap slots. The two contrasting strap guides hold the shoulder piece securely in place. This allows the full bottom area to comfortably spread out the load. Fully dressed and burnished edges and lined wall to wall with new suede leather on the bottom.

Strap Notables |
An excellent old western rein. I hated to remove any of the leather but I skived it just enough to level out the thickness to a solid 3/16”, re-dressed the bottom edges, and slicked it smooth. This one has the Schutz Bros Maker Mark that will be visible somewhere on the front of the finished strap.Schutz has been the cowboys “go to” tack supply since 1946.
